Shakira’s much anticipated return to the concert stage is finally here. On June 3, the global pop icon kicks off her El Dorado World Tour in Hamburg, Germany for the first of 39 shows spanning Europe and North America. The tour, which is presented by Rakuten in North America and Europe, is Shakira’s first since The Sun Comes Out World Tour in 2010-11 and the Colombian songstress has promised fans it will be her best show yet.
For Rakuten, presenting Shakira’s El Dorado world tour is another exciting opportunity to introduce the company to new audiences around the globe. Rakuten is the main global partner of newly minted La Liga champions FC Barcelona and jersey partner of reigning NBA Champion Golden State Warriors, but this marks Rakuten’s first sponsorship of a pop star of Shakira’s global standing and represents a bold new step aimed at boosting Rakuten’s global branding, customer and community engagement. And like the elite sports brands just mentioned, Rakuten could hardly have found a better partner than Shakira.
Shakira is widely recognized as one of the most successful Latin recording artists of all-time. She is the highest-selling Colombian artist ever with worldwide album sales estimated at over 125 million and has been hailed by critics throughout her illustrious career, earning 3 Grammy awards and 13 Latin Grammy awards, including the 2018 Grammy for Best Latin Pop album for El Dorado.
Since its release in May 2017, Shakira’s El Dorado album has been a smashing success. It quickly became the best-selling album by a Latin artist in more than two years, according to Billboard and earned Shak her record-breaking seventh No. 1 album on the Latin Pop album charts. Shortly after the album’s release, five songs from El Dorado were simultaneously tracking in the Top 50, which elevated her to second amongst female solo artists for singles charted in the 31-year history of the Hot Latin Songs chart.
To help amplify the El Dorado tour around the world, Rakuten Viber, a global messaging and calling app with 900 million users, will become the ‘Official Messaging App’ for the tour and offer fans exclusive content, sticker packs and a chatbot experience with Shakira on its platform.
For the legions of fans who have been clamoring to hear Shakira serenade them in person once again with hits from both her new album and her considerable back catalogue, the wait is nearly over. But it’s not only fans that are looking forward to June 3. As Shakira herself has admitted, “I am counting the days till showtime!”
