First Japanese company to meet stringent European privacy standard

At Rakuten, respecting and protecting the privacy of our users has always been a top priority. Today, we are very excited to announce that we are taking this commitment a leap further.

The Data Protection Authority of Luxembourg has approved our application to implement binding corporate rules within the Rakuten Group. This green light makes Rakuten the first – yes, the first! – Japanese company to be approved to implement this exemplary European standard.

Our goal is to protect the privacy of our users while providing a smooth, efficient, and customized experience on our shopping site. That’s why we clearly tell our users what information we collect and how we use it in our privacy policies on our various websites. It is our firm belief that if we care for our customers’ data, our customers will benefit from that assurance when they purchase from our merchant partners.

Today’s announcement means that European data protection authorities have given their stamp of approval to our privacy protection policies. Binding corporate rules define how a company treats personal data in accordance with European standards. These are strict procedures that ensure a consistent, high standard of privacy protection in the Rakuten Group, across the globe. They assure our customers, merchants and employees that their personal information is protected, regardless of where the data resides.

Rakuten takes its data protection responsibilities seriously and is transparent with data protection regulators.

And now you no longer have to just take our word for it. You can take the word of those who uphold Europe’s rigorous privacy protection standards.
