Giving to gain: Rakuten’s global commitment to gender equality

This past March, Rakuten teams around the world marked Women’s History Month with a shared theme: “Give to Gain.” Across regions, employees came together for events and initiatives centered on the powerful idea that investing in generosity, collaboration and reciprocity, will lead to a more supportive and equitable world.
From career development sessions in Japan to community-building activities in Singapore, China, EMEA and the Americas, the month highlighted how small acts of support can create meaningful and lasting impact.
Cultivating awareness and growth in Japan

Spearheaded by the Diversity and Inclusion Office, Rakuten’s Japan offices hosted a month-long program built around the pillars of “Awareness, Development and Network.”
Beyond vibrant entrance decorations and specially curated cafeteria menus, employees engaged in impactful events. One highlight was the “Know the body, prepare for your future” wellness seminar led by Dr. Miho Egawa of Kyoto University Hospital. This session raised awareness of the physiological and psychological changes women experience throughout their lives and offered practical self-care strategies. Further emphasizing professional growth, the “Unleash Your Potential” career development event provided valuable insights and tools for career advancement.
Fostering connection and dialogue in Singapore

In Singapore, the organization’s International Women’s Day event featured a hands-on crochet flower session that served as a perfect blend of creativity and camaraderie. Beyond this interactive experience, the “Give to Gain” theme resonated deeply during a dynamic panel discussion, which explored topics ranging from shifting the focus to shared responsibility to actively supporting women in the workforce and in their personal lives.
Blending tradition and empowerment in China

Rakuten’s China office marked the occasion by combining the Lantern Festival – a cultural celebration that signals the close of Chinese New Year celebrations – with International Women’s Day. Celebrations in Beijing, Shanghai and Dalian were brimming with tradition, creativity and laughter. The office featured a “Goddess Compliment Wall,” a space where colleagues could share uplifting messages and kind words, fostering a powerful sense of community and appreciation.
Amplifying opportunity across EMEA

In Rakuten’s Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA) organization, the impact of “Give to Gain” was powerfully demonstrated through “Arise,” a dedicated Women’s Network and first Employee Resource Group (ERG). Their International Women’s Day panel, “Give to Gain: How Sponsorship, Visibility and Allyship Multiply Opportunity,” brought together colleagues from across the region. This insightful discussion explored tangible ways to expand opportunities through active sponsorship, enhanced visibility and unwavering allyship.
Building confidence and community in the Americas
The Women@Rakuten ERG in the Americas kicked off Women’s History Month with an inspiring “Building Confidence” session, fostering vital discussions that reduced stigma and normalized shared experiences. Multiple sessions followed, designed to empower individuals to find and use their voice authentically through “Self-Advocacy & Assertive Communication,” and to manage self-doubt and foster confidence through an “Overcoming Imposter Syndrome” session. This ERG, open to all employees in the Americas, is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.
Women’s History Month at Rakuten truly embodied the spirit of “Give to Gain.” Through collective efforts rooted in generosity, collaboration and reciprocity, the company is not only advancing gender equality but also building a more supportive, enriching and ultimately, more successful world for all.
