Supporting data-driven decision-making: The Work of a Data Pipeline Engineer
As a Vice Manager of the Data Pipeline Engineering Team, I am responsible for designing, developing and operating data pipelines*, as well as leading our team of seven. In my management role, I work closely with our manager, overseeing technical decision-making, project progress and the professional development of each team member.
Our mission is to provide highly reliable pipelines that enable fast, data-driven decisions in business and service operations. This involves handling vast amounts of anonymized user activity data from our sites and applications, in full compliance with laws and Rakuten’s privacy policy, and making it available for various services and our in-house analytics platform. The work demands both high throughput and low latency, requiring consistently strong technical standards from requirements definition and design through operational improvement.
A particularly significant project was a full-scale migration of our pipeline to a cloud-based infrastructure. Moving such a large and complex system posed major challenges, but it ultimately delivered measurable value in scalability, fault tolerance and cost optimization.
Challenges in system stabilization and growth from presentation experience
A few years ago, our team focused on improving internal data pipelines. We reviewed development rules, strengthened our review system and enhanced our data QA (Quality Assurance) process. Although these improvements took time, ongoing verification and systematization significantly reduced defects and improved overall productivity.
Last October, I had the opportunity to present the platform migration project alongside my manager at an internal conference for engineers. Speaking to a large audience was initially intimidating, but it became a chance to share our team’s achievements and grow personally. By carefully preparing and rehearsing, we successfully conveyed the full scope of the project and our team’s efforts.
The presentation was well-received and led to invitations to speak at additional conferences. This experience boosted my confidence in delivering results outside my comfort zone and contributed to my growth as a technical professional and leader.
Balancing work and creative time
Outside of work, I value spending time with friends and pursuing creative hobbies such as painting and sewing. These activities offer a different kind of focus and help me switch gears. I also enjoy traveling, exploring Japan and other Asian countries and gaining fresh experiences and inspiration.
Because my work can sometimes extend late into the night, I intentionally set boundaries to maintain a healthy rhythm. I schedule activities like squash, painting classes and dinners with friends and colleagues on weeknights to naturally separate work from personal life. By carefully tracking overtime and using our flextime system, I allocate my working hours efficiently throughout the month. This self-paced approach helps me maintain high-quality work while keeping a sustainable work-life balance.
I believe this approach is essential too long-term success and personal well-being.
